A Simple Ritual To Honor The Landvaettir

There are many ways to do this and depending on the particular spirits that dwell there it may need to be changed, but since it’s almost time to put the animals out in the pastures and offer to the wights of the land here we wanted to offer a simple outline of how to do this at your home.

You can read this article to get an idea of what to offer the landvaettir, once you have your tray and bowl / horn etc ready to offer, here is a simple outline you can use.

The Ritual

As you approach the place where you will leave your offering take a moment to reflect on your purpose there, to show respect to the spirits who dwell there, and to center yourself then stand before the spirit mound and say:

“Wights of this stead, elders of the earth, I call to those who dwell in stone, in root, and in soil.
To the hidden folk of this pasture and the wardens of these fields:
I seek your ear.”

“I am [Your Name], who dwells here and works this land. I come not with cold iron to harm, nor with ill-will to disturb. I come to honor the ancient truce and to strengthen the bond between us.”

As you place the food in its place and pour the liquids on the ground you say:

“From my hand to the land, a gift for a gift. Accept this gift of (oatmeal , milk etc) as a token of my respect. As I thrive, may the land thrive; As you ward this stead, may I honor your presence. Peace in the soil, peace in the hall.”

“The word is spoken. The gift is laid. Be welcome here, as I am welcome here. Hail the Landvættir.”

As you turn to go, do not look back. Allow the spirits their privacy to enjoy your gifts.

We hope this will help encourage you to begin offering to the spirits of the land, your ancestors, and more.

Hail the Landvaetter!
